I realized that what we do matters. Every product we create, everything we contribute creates the framework for the next iteration of design. Too much this means creating a new SKU for the next calendar year, focusing on nothing that would begin to provide a lasting beneficial impact. I want to be proud of the work I do, not for the form but for the help and joy that it can bring through the service it provides.
I want to be able to create designs that consider the entire product from conception to discernment, ensuring the things I create provide nurturing experiences to both the people that use them and the environment they are created in. Am I skilled enough to do this yet? Absolutely not. But I work every day to gain these skills so that one day my efforts will improve the common good. I set aside two hours every single day to learn, which amounts to more than a college course every single month.
