Datelite Memory Lamp

In a world of pervasive IOT devices, we are bombarded with constant reminders and notifications that dull our ability to recall important things on our own. What if a reminder was more subtle, and forced you to recall on your own?

Ambient light reminder lamp

Datelite uses intensity of light to remind you of important events in your life; the more important the date, the more the light spreads across the wall. By not directly announcing what the event is, the lamp reduces our dependence on technology and strengthens our ability to recall past and future events.

If you cannot remember the event, approach the wall lamp and turn it counterclockwise - a hidden screen illuminates to help you out.

The raised handle is reminiscent of the hand on a clock dial, and allows you to turn down the light with an intuitive motion.

Set it and forget it

Datelite is easy to use. Simply enter a date and description into the IOS app, and Datelite automatically assigns a light importance to the event. It also allows you to schedule repeat yearly reminders for events like anniversaries and birthdays, or even smaller memories.

Although the lamp is calendar controlled it is not intended to be a full replacement for an existing calendar, but an accompanying product that makes recalling the events easier.

The app that comes with Datelight allows you to input important memories and indicate their significance.

When turned counterclockwise, the light dims, and the display slowly reveals the memory in case you had forgotten.

Minimal function, minimal design, minimal movement

The wall lamp is designed to be hung in a prominent location, and promptly forgotten about until a significant event arrives. There are few visual features that draw your eye to it, as the most impactful interaction should be when the light starts to spread across the room.

Several texture details, such as the brushed metal finish and hidden tactile rubber, serve to refine the design at closer inspection.

Rotating Datelite to reveal the hidden display is the most physical interaction the average user will have with the lamp after its initial setup.

The starting point for the design was the way the light would interact with its surroundings. Datelite would always be secondary to the light itself, so it made sense to create a very simple form that would let the light shine, literally and figuratively.

To test the real-world functionality, I coded a raspberry pi and micro controller to illuminate a lamp in conjunction with the importance of my life events.
