Flares are ubiquitous on watercraft for their necessity; not having one when you are in need can spell disaster. However, without the ability to travel with them easily, flares cannot be easily accessed by hikers or by those on international expeditions. As a result, hikers bring mirrors and other flashing signals that are used in their absence.
Lasers travel tens of miles further, and can be manufactured so their diode is a slit instead of a point. What this does is allow the user to scan the horizon and contact anyone on the visible horizon. Lightlaser automates this difficult scanning process with a self-panning laser system.
